2024 Kemang People Traffic Trends: Still a Top Choice for Hangouts?

Kemang, South Jakarta, used to be the hype place to hang out. Back in the mid-’90s to early 2000s, this area was packed with cafes, bars, and restaurants, making it the go-to social hub for South Jakarta’s youth.

But over time, the hype started to fade. The crowd that once filled Kemang’s hotspots began shifting—first to Senopati, then Blok M and Melawai, and now to PIK 2.

So, has Kemang really lost its charm, or is it still a favorite hangout spot? Bhumi Varta Technology analyzed location data from mobile devices to track people traffic trends in Kemang throughout 2024.

Here’s what we found:

The image above shows how foot traffic in Kemang fluctuated throughout 2024. In total, more than 637 million devices were detected in the area over the year.

In January, there were 59 million devices recorded, but the numbers gradually dropped, with a slight increase in March. However, the downward trend continued until June.

Then in October, things turned around—traffic spiked to 69 million devices. The upward trend kept going, reaching 86 million in December. This shows that the trend of visits to the Kemang area is steadily rising.

From the image, we can see the number of Points of Interest (POI) in Kemang—places that attract a lot of visitors. As mentioned earlier, Kemang has always been a lively area filled with cafes, bars, and restaurants.

In 2024, there are 5,411 food and drink spots spread across the area. Here’s a breakdown of the biggest categories:

Takeaways

Based on this analysis, we can conclude that  Kemang experienced a decline in visitor trends, especially in the middle of the year. However, the trend began to shift in October, with a significant increase in the number of detected devices. This upward trend continued in the following months.

Several factors contributed to this rise in people traffic, one of which is the growing number of new hangout spots offering unique experiences.

For example, Nob Coffee & Eatery Barnyard brings a Lembang, Bandung-style ambiance, complete with cozy decor and a relaxing atmosphere. Tea lovers can visit Hakuji Tearoom to enjoy traditional matcha and even experience a matcha ceremony firsthand. Besides coffee shops, Kemang has also seen the rise of new bars, such as Dronk Restaurant & Bar and SPARTA BAR.

With more trendy spots popping up, Kemang is regaining its charm as one of Jakarta’s favorite destinations. Once thought to be fading, the area is now buzzing again with visitors from all over.
