Who doesn’t know about Warung Madura?
Over the past three years, these little warungs have been popping up everywhere and grabbing attention, especially around Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (aka Jabodetabek).
You can find Warung Madura in all kinds of places — from tiny alleys, street corners, packed neighborhoods, to around campuses. What makes them stand out is that they’re open 24 hours non-stop.
Even during big holidays like Eid, when most shops close, Warung Madura stays open like it’s just another day. No wonder people joke that these warungs will only shut down when the world ends.
But, did you know?
Before Warung Madura became this big, it actually started with just a small group of migrants from Sumenep, East Java. Back in the late ’90s, they moved to Jakarta and opened a simple grocery in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta.
BVT did a deep dive and performed location analysis of the Tanjung Priok area — the spot where Warung Madura first took root. From this, we mapped out how many grocery stores are scattered there and their business potential.
Here’s what we found:
BVT did a location analysis by setting a 10 km radius from the heart of Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta. Within that area, there are over a million people living there, and in March 2025 alone, the people traffic hit more than 341 million mobile devices.
Still within the same radius, BVT’s data found 2,447 grocery stores, 309 rice stores, 446 fruit stores, and 195 water stores. All of these are spread across the Tanjung Priok area, North Jakarta.
Tanjung Priok is home to a variety of residential areas. Among them is a large housing complex owned by Agung Sedayu Group, along with 67 other residential neighborhoods. There are also two residential clusters and four developments by Summarecon, as well as two by Agung Podomoro.
The area is further complemented by nine apartment complexes, 168 apartment units, 985 shophouses, and more.
Key Takeaways
Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, is where Warung Madura first started, and by 2025, it’s now home to over 2,000 warungs. The area is super crowded, with more than a million people living there.
But it’s not just Warung Madura that fills up the area—there are also plenty of other small businesses, like fruit shops and water stores, though none are quite as widespread as the Madura stalls.
These stalls are everywhere, from residential neighborhoods to apartments. It makes sense, though, since Tanjung Priok is full of housing developments from big names like Agung Sedayu Group, Summarecon, Agung Podomoro, and several apartment complexes.
With so many people living here, it’s no surprise that Warung Madura has taken off. These stalls usually pop up in high-traffic areas, especially in densely populated spots.
