Jakarta always gets livelier during Ramadan! As a bustling metropolitan city, there are plenty of places that become the heart of activity this time of year. From pop-up food stalls to busy mosques, every corner of the city has something special to offer. Â
Some streets even transform into seasonal food hubs, packed with vendors selling delicious Ramadan treats. Meanwhile, mosques become go-to spots for people joining Islamic studies and prayers. Â
But that’s not all—many other places in Jakarta turn into hotspots as people find their own ways to celebrate the holy month. Â
With all this buzz, BVT analyzed people traffic data from mobile phones to find out which locations are the busiest in Jakarta during Ramadan 2024. Â
Here’s what we found:
This image shows a map of crowd distribution in Jakarta during Ramadan. The bigger the circle, the busier the area. Â
On the other hand, smaller circles mean the place is quieter with less activity. From the pattern, we can see that the busiest spots during Ramadan are mostly in Central Jakarta and South Jakarta.
Next, we picked the five biggest circles on the map, which represent the busiest spots:
đźź Manggarai Area
🟢 Monas
🟣 Thamrin City
🔵 Sudirman
đź”´ Glodok
The Manggarai area stands out as a major transit hub. Since it’s a key spot for switching between KRL trains, buses, and other transport modes, it naturally becomes a meeting point for commuters. With people constantly getting on and off, plus moving between different transportation options, the area stays busy all day long.
Monas is always a crowd magnet, and it’s no surprise. As a national landmark and popular tourist spot, it attracts both locals and foreigners. Plus, it often hosts big public events like festivals, concerts, and social gatherings. The wide-open space also makes it a favorite spot for jogging, hanging out, or just relaxing, which keeps the area lively. Â
Thamrin City, on the other hand, is all about shopping. Known for its wholesale market, it’s a go-to place for Muslim clothing, batik, and other retail goods, drawing in buyers from different regions. Â
Sudirman is packed with office buildings and big companies, making it a hub for office workers throughout the day. Then there’s Glodok—Jakarta’s Chinatown and a well-known trading center. This area is filled with wholesalers selling everything from electronics and household goods to traditional medicine and authentic Chinese food, keeping the place bustling with activity.
Looking at the number of mobile devices detected in March 2024, the Manggarai area stayed pretty stable, with only slight daily fluctuations. On average, around 100,000 devices were recorded per month.
Meanwhile, Glodok also showed a steady trend, with about 1,000 devices per month. The Thamrin and Sudirman areas had similar numbers, averaging around 900 devices per month.
As for Monas, the number of recorded devices was lower, at around 100 devices per month.
Key Takeaways
From the analysis, Manggarai, Monas, Thamrin City, Sudirman, and Glodok were the five busiest areas during Ramadan last year. The crowds in these spots were influenced by different factors like commuter movement, shopping, office activity, and tourism or public events.
In terms of mobile devices detected, Manggarai was the busiest, mainly because it’s a major transit hub. Glodok came next, followed by Thamrin City and Sudirman, with Monas having the lowest numbers among the five.
