Dwell Time in Jakarta’s Top 5 Busiest Locations During Ramadan 2024

During Ramadan, people’s movement patterns usually shift. A lot of them tend to hang out in specific places like malls, restaurants, places of worship, or other busy spots.

The amount of time someone spends in one location is called dwell time. This dwell time can tell us how attractive or relevant a place is to the public at that moment.

For businesses, this kind of insight is valuable. It helps them figure out which areas are crowd magnets, so they can plan better, whether it’s for boosting sales, running events, or expanding to new locations.

BVT recently analyzed location trends during Ramadan using data from mobile devices. From this, we were able to find the five busiest places in Jakarta during Ramadan last year, along with how long people stayed in each spot.

Here’s what we found:

The image above shows circles in different sizes. The bigger the circle, the busier the place. The smaller the circle, the fewer people were there. We picked the five biggest circles or the most crowded spots, and here they are:

🟠 Manggarai

🟢 Monas

🟣 Thamrin City

🔵 Sudirman

🔴 Glodok

Now, if we look at the dwell time, the image shows that around 46,000 devices were detected in the Manggarai area for 10 to 20 hours. That’s quite a long time; most likely, these people were staying or living there, since that kind of duration usually means they’re at home.

There were also about 35,000 devices in Manggarai for 5 to 10 hours,  and around 24,000 devices were only there for 21 minutes to an hour. This shorter stay suggests they were just passing through, maybe for shopping, commuting, or quick errands in the area.

As for Glodok, Monas, Sudirman, and Thamrin City, most devices were detected staying for around 21 minutes to 1 hour, and some for 3 to 10 hours. This indicates that people spent a moderate to relatively long amount of time in the area.

Key Takeaways

From the analysis, we can see that in the Manggarai area, most devices were detected in two main time ranges: between 21 minutes to 1 hour, and 3 to 20 hours. The least activity was in the short range, 0 to 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, in Glodok, Monas, Sudirman, and Thamrin City, most people stayed for 21 minutes to 1 hour, and some for 3 to 10 hours. Not many were around for more than 20 hours.

This dwell time pattern can be useful for business. It helps figure out the best time to open or close, when to run events or promos, and how to plan marketing strategies based on when people are actually around in those areas.
